New Delhi: The Assembly elections may be some months away but the Samajwadi Party, Congress and the BJP have already started scoring political points over each other.
And far away from this madding crowd of politicians, the BSP has begun work on a well-thought-out battle plan.
BSP leader Kanshi Ram described her as the organisational master. Living up to this reputation, BSP supremo Mayawati has begun the mammoth excercise of distributing tickets for the Uttar Pradesh Assembly elections next year.
With her sights set on winning this largest electoral battlefield, the shrewd woman politician has begun her unique but scientific way of choosing nominees for each of the 403 seats.
BSP District Coordinator Ghaziabad, Ramprasad Pradhan says, "For the last one year we have been strengthening our Vidhan Sabha committees. Both the Zila and the Lok sabha coordinators have strengthened the party right down to the bottom-most rung."
First a list of possible candidates are prepared by the zonal, district and assembly level commitees. These are further examined by not just the main coordinator for the district but also the regional incharge of the state.
Once this list reaches Mayawati, she further scrutinises each candidate's capability by sending undercover agents.
District coordinator Haji Sabil says, "None of the committees or coordinators know who is going to come and check their credentials in order to avoid any bias."
The champion of dalit rights is leaving no stone unturned to bet on the right horse.
In a state where political fortunes are determined by caste politics, particular attention is being paid to the right caste combination of the candidate. To avoid caste biases, the chosen coordinators represent different castes.
Of course rival parties have dismissed her methodology.
Says Samajwadi Party leader Mohan Singh, "She only sells her tickets to the highest bidder."
It was Mayawati's mentor Kanshi Ram who taught her the advantage of going about her business silently - away from prying eyes.
Today this dalit leader has a formidable hold on the politics of the most populous state in the country and a loyal workforce that is rallying behind her on her march to the Chief Minister's office.
