Kolkata: Two days before his party's Congress in Coimbatore, Bengal Chief Minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee has issued a warning to the UPA, saying the Left should think of tying up with the Third Front.
“We realize that a BJP-led coalition is a disaster. We realize that the Congress-led UPA alliance is failing miserably,” he said.
A rare critic of the UPA launching, Bhattacharjee launched his poll campaign in West Bengal before he heads for Coimbatore.
Two days before the CPM party congress begins in Tamil Nadu, Bhattacharjee is also setting the agenda: UPA bashing for the Centre's economic politicies and more importantly for the nuclear friendship with the US.
He did so in the company of his recently re-elected Tripura CM Manik Sarkar
“We are looking for alternatives. Our all-India party congress would begin at Coimbatore in two days. There we'll discuss the third alternative and for that the Leftists should be standing on solid ground,” he said.
Not that everybody in his party shares his views. The Coimbatore party congress will have to take a crucial decision after carefully studying the national political picture.
Is a third alternative really viable, especially at a time when even the Samajwadi Party is edging closer to Congress?
There are many in the CPI(M) who believe that to prevent the NDA from wresting power they'll have to prop up Congress, a relationship which hasn't worked well over the past four years....but still a relationship that is unavoidable.
