Barely was it mourning the loss of face in the by-elections with Trinamool Congress ousting the Left that now a demand for early elections has come. And it is not from arch rival Mamata Banerjee but from Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee's government.
“If the people's mandate requires us to sit in the Opposition then we should do that. We have to accept people's mandate,” state Fisheries Minister Kironmoy Nanda said.
A deeply embarrassed Left had to issue a denial to clear the air about the polls.
“Left Front got a mandate to rule and run the government for six years. Election are due in 2011,” CPI-M MP Basudev Acharya confirmed.
But this confusion was enough to add to the Trinamool chief’s joy. At the all party meeting Mamata made it very clear that the Parliament session will be stormy as she plans to raise the Lalgarh issue.
“This Government is not delivering on anything. There is no governance,” Mamata said.
Senior leaders of the CPI-M are abroad and Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee is left alone to face the music. With Mamata making it very clear that there will be no let up in her battle against the Left, the countdown to the polls has already begun.
In its last term the UPA was constantly under pressure from the Left. This time around too the pressure from Bengal continues. The Congress needs Mamata but it is also aware that not all her demands can be met easily.
