Builders reclaim South Mumbai land illegally

Mumbai: In Mumbai there has been a shocking violation of Coastal regulation norms. The prime land in South Mumbai's coastal stretch is being illegally reclaimed. An RTI query - filed by BJP leader Vinod Tawade - has exposed how each government agency not only washed its hands of the matter, but claimed ignorance about the reclamation activity.

The land is the infamous landing spot of the 26/11 terrorists and is just opposite South Mumbai's Badhwar park.

The RTI has revealed how four acres of the prime land is gradually being filled up in complete violation of environment rules.

The Coastal Regulation Zone Act specifies that no development can take place within 200 metres of the high-tide line. Not just that, but any reclamation near the sea needs permissions from the Union Environment Ministry and the state government.

However, all these rules are being openly flouted, highlighting the brazen manner in which the agencies involved are operating.

Interestingly, every agency the RTI query was addressed to kept passing it on.

  • The Mumbai Municipal Corporation forwarded the questions to the State Urban Development department
  • Urban Development officials on their part claimed the land was not under their jurisdiction
  • The City Collector finally directed another agency, the MMRDA - which is the city's regional planning authority - to reply to the RTI
  • The city's green lobby is now up in arms and activists allege builders are using every ploy to usurp prime land.

Civic Planner, Chandrashekhar Prabhu says, "It's a sinister move by some builders to first reclaim, then try and own the land."

However, despite their loud complaints, there has been no action from the part of the authorities to halt the city's transition into a concrete jungle.
