Mumbai: A residential building collapsed in Mumbai’s crowded Borivilli area killing 28 and injuring 15 people. Over 50 persons are still trapped inside the Lakshmi Chaya building while the rescue operations were on until Thursday morning.
According to eyewitnesses and local residents, the collapse was an outcome of sheer negligence on the part of municipal authorities that did not pay heed to unauthorized construction work going on at the ground floor of the building.
“The shop called Vardhman Jewelers was undergoing renovation and the owner demolished a pillar which was supporting the main water tank in the building. He was even warned by a few residents that by demolishing the main columns, entire building might come down. But he did not listen,” said a residents whose relatives were still trapped in the rubble.
A dozen fire engines and paramedical personnel were rushed to the spot. The building housed commercial establishments on the ground floor, and shopkeepers and customers were among those feared trapped.
People helped in rescuing those trapped inside the Lakshmi Chaya building which collapsed Wednesday evening. Kamitkar, another resident heard his brother Vinay's desperate call from under tons of debris asking for help.
“My brother has called me. He is trapped inside. This has happened because a resident called Kailash Jain who, in order to expand his jewellery shop, knocked down the main columns of the building without seeking anybody’s permission,” he said.
Chief Minister Vilasrao Deshmukh assured that an enquiry will be conducted to find out the cause of the collapse. “Magisterial enquiry will be conducted to know why it happened. We'll take help from Corporation people. Our first work is to get people out of here. We will give all help to the families,” said Deshmukh.
Rescue teams and municipal authorities were also joined by local residents and NGOs who came out for rescue operations. However, the growing anger is evident at the reckless action which caused the building to fall in a heap.
