Mumbai: A five-storey building collapsed in the congested lanes of Crawford Market in Mumbai at about 0500 hrs IST on Wednesday killing at least six people.
Relief and rescue efforts have been launched and 10 fire engines have been rushed to the spot.
One of the injured has been pulled out from the debris while some more people are still feared trapped.
"Six members of the Syyed family are still trapped under the debris. The piling work next to the building may be the reason for this collapse. We have removed the body of a 12 year old and there is another body of a lady," BMC Commissioner Jairaj Pathak said.
Farhan Syyed, whose brother's family is trapped under the debris, has blamed it on BMC for their piling work near to the collapsed building, which was against all set norms.
"Piling should be done from a distance of 15 feet but the BMC and MARDA did it from a distance of 1.5 feet. They piled 40 feet below and that's why the building collapsed. They are responsible for this. Our building was strong, the pillars were strong. It's all because of piling. My doctor brother and his family are under debris and only one has been rescued so far," said Farhan.
And Mumbai has had a history of old buildings collapsing.
On August 13 this year, at least 20 people died when an old building came down in the crowded area of Bhendi Bazaar in south Mumbai where on August 18, 2007, an 80-year-old building in Mumbai's Lamington Road come crashing down in which at seven people were killed.
On July 17, 2007 an entire wing of a building in Borivali collapsed, killing 25 people.
