Chennai: A bullfight organised by the ruling Dravida Munnettra Kazhagam (DMK) on Monday in Tiruchirapalli in Tamil Nadu turned tragic when one man was killed and over a hundred injured.

It was chaos in the name of the Chief Minister M Karunanidhi that was the end result of a bullfight organised by the DMK in the city. The bullfight was meant to be a part of Karunanidhi's birthday celebrations but it left one man dead and over a hundred injured.

"The medical facilities are very poor so we are rushing to another hospital," brother of victim lamented.

One reason why the traditional sport turned tragic is because none of the safety precautions seem to have been taken.

The Supreme Court when it revoked the ban on Jallikattu in January has laid down a list of guidelines and precautionary measures but animal rights activists argue these are hardly implemented, not even when the bullfight is organised by the ruling political party.

Chinni Krishna of the Blue Cross said, "Virtually every such event does not follow the norms in this case too several norms were flouted. They should have taken permission from the Animal Welfare Board, which they did not. They should have given three days notice, which they did not. They should have had adequate medical facilities which they did not."

The bullfight in Tiruchirapalli was inaugurated by Tamil Nadu Transport Minister KN Nehru and was organised officially by the DMK's Trichy unit.

The tragic turn of events comes as a severe embarrassment for the party and even more so for the Chief Minister.
