Tamil Nadu: 600 bulls vs 550 men - this big event of Jallikattu or bull taming is all about power and honour. Ask Senthil Kumar, who's managed to walk away with quite a few prizes on Wednesday and he will you it was so.
But eventually he had to pay a price for all the accolades - he was injured, albeit not too seriously. However, he's not bothered.
"It's a sport of the brave. It's normal to get injured in this game," says Kumar.
The much awaited bull taming event or Jallikattu came to an end in Madurai on Wednesday amidst the usual fanfare.
However, this year's Jallikattu had some good tidings. Compared with two deaths and 600 injuries last year, this time, only 70 were injured at the end of the day.
Says Block Medical Officer, A Krishnan, "There are very few injuries this time around and those who have been injured are not in a serious condition."
About 1 lakh people gathered to watch the annual event. To prevent any untoward incident, administration had set up double barricades and medical teams were also present at the spot.
Says Madurai District Collector, T Udayachandran, "We tried to maintain a fine balance between animal rights and the sentiments of the villagers."
