Burundi student attack case: One more arrested

Chandigarh: Punjab Police on Tuesday arrested the son of a cooperative mill Managing Director and issued a Look Out Circular (LOC) against an accused in the case of attack on Burundi student Yannick Nihangaza over two months ago.

"We have made a fresh arrest. The accused Amarbir Bajwa is charged with beating up Yannick and he has been arrested," Additional DCP Jalandhar, Navjot Mahal, said.

He said Bajwa, whose father is a Managing Director of a cooperative mill, was being questioned by the police.

With Bajwa\'s arrest, the total number of accused arrested so far in the case has gone up to five.

Mahal further said that the LOC had been issued against another accused in the case, Jaskaran Singh alias Jassa, who flew to Australia on a student visa after the incident.

Meanwhile, Romi Uppal, son of an SP rank officer, whose two-day police remand ended on Tuesday was sent to another two days police remand by a Jalandhar Court.

Amandeep Singh, son of a bank officer, allegedly involved in the attack on the Burundi student and arrested on Monday was also sent to two days police remand on Tuesday.

Those already arrested in this case are Romi Uppal, Sahil Deep Singh and another accused Sumeet. All of them are in police custody, Mahal said.

Uppal, son of Punjab Superintendent of Police Dharam Singh Uppal, had last week surrendered before police.

There were about 10 people who attacked 23-year-old Nihangaza on April 21 and he continued to be in a state of coma for the last two months in a private hospital at Patiala.
