New Delhi: By first week of May Delhiites will have to shell out more for travelling on autos, taxis and DTC buses. The Capitals transport unions are demanding that fares be doubled.

People of Delhi may have to pay more for autos and taxis soon. Auto and taxi unions have submitted a proposal on fare hike to the state government.

The last hike was in 2002 and since then, unions say, their demands have not been heard.

Delhi auto union president Rajinder Soni said, “If prices for dal and rice can be increases why not autos.”

Unions want rates for autos increased from Rs 8 for the first one kilometre to Rs 15.

For black and yellow taxis from the current Rs 13 for the first one-kilometer to Rs 30 rupees. In the case of DTC buses, the employee unions want it doubled.

The commuters are not amused.

A Delhi commuter Rajan Nath said, “No body goes by the government rates. They charge atleast Rs 20 to Rs 30 extra. The auto fares in Delhi are quite high as compared to other places and if there is an increase I think it’s going to worsen the situation.”

The Delhi government says it has not finalised any fare hike so far. It says the Cabinet will meet to discuss the proposals submitted by various unions, but it does list reasons to justify any hike.

Delhi Transport Minister Haroon Yusuf said, “In the last four years there was lot of pressure because the prices of CNG has gone up diesel has gone up and lubricants prices have gone up.”

Though the government has many reasons to justify but practical problems like autos not running by meter.
