Bush arrives for G8, gets jeered at

CNN-IBN

New Delhi: US President George W Bush arrived in Germany to attend the G-8 summit, amidst widespread protests.

The tension between the US and Russia have already overshadowed the start of the G-8 summit when about 400 protesters tried to block the route Bush was to take to the summit venue in Heiligenddamm.

Bush and his wife were jeered by anti-war and anti-capitalism protestors.

Subsequently, the police arrested 57 anti-G-8 demonstrators and removed them from the scene. Around 16,000 policemen have been deployed at the Baltic Sea resort - where the summit is taking place - to guard the world leaders.

Protesters have filed an appeal in court against the decision to bar them from getting close to the summit venue. They are also irked by the decision to put up a 12-kilometer long steel and concrete fence around Heiligenddamm.

The current tension has diverted the G-8's campaign against climate change and global warming.

Protests by anarchists and anti-globalisation groups have degenerated into violence since Saturday, leaving hundreds of police and demonstrators injured.
