New York: He can handle a power saw, but when it comes to the power of the Internet, President George W Bush seems to get tripped up. "I hear there are rumours on the Internets..." the US President said in an interaction recently.
Not once but at least twice, President Bush has inexplicably added an 's' to the word Internet. "We can have filters on the Internets," Bush said on another occasion.
President bush is well known for occasionally misspeaking, but it seems hard to mis-underestimate his understanding of the Internet.
Then during a CNBC interview, the President was asked if he ever googles. "Occasionally, one of the things I've used the google is to pull up maps," he said. But 'the google'? Well, it may be petty, but 'the google' had techno geeks agog. "I wonder on which one of 'the internets' he uses 'the google'," reads one blog post.
"He was just referring to it as 'the google' like 'the Donald'," says Jacob Weisberg, the editor who is working on a sixth edition of Bushisms.
Forget the Donald, "I'm the decider.." goes Bush. So when 'the decider' says 'the google', the editor of Bushisms is obviously the man to call. Jacob Weisberg emailed back that he was eating 'the lunch' when CNN called for an interview.
"It's a little bit the way my mom talks about technology. It's sort of sweet, endearing. She calls to tell you she got an email," Weisberg points out.
President Bush said he uses 'the google' to look at satellite maps of his ranch in Crawford. "...It reminds me of where I want to be sometimes," Bush said.
As for 'the google'. the company says it's flattered. "He can call it whatever the heck he wants to call it," the company said. Besides, he's technically correct. There is more than one Internet. Internet2 is, in fact, a better, faster network used by universities and others.
