CBI decodes Sarabjot's extortion plan

CNN-IBN

New Delhi: National Commission for Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes Chairman and former Union minister Buta Singh has once again accused the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) of targeting his family.

“I will reveal in appropriate time whose conspiracy it is,” says Buta Singh.

Buta Singh's son Sarabjot son was arrested on July 30 for allegedly taking Rs 1 crore as bribe from Nashik-based builder Ram Rao Patil to get the builder's name cleared from a case. He will be in CBI custody till August 5.

But CBI sources say they have proof from phone taps of Sarabjot allegedly extorting money from Patil.

It seems the investigating agency has cracked a set of code words, multiple mobile phone numbers and hawala operators in the case against Sarabjot..

According to CBI sources the extortion of money from Patil was closely guarded using the code words 'Patel, Honey, Dhanlakshmi collection, and City'.

CBI started tapping the phone calls of the accused from July 18 after Patil lodged a complaint.

Anup Begi from Pune, who was allegedly playing the middleman between Sarabjot and Patil made use of the code words for the first time on July 28.

After receiving money from Patil, Begi is said to have called up Sarabjot and said "I have received the honey", which have been interpreted as "I have received the sum of Rs 1 crore".

CBI sources say that Sarabjot was using hawala operators in Mumbai and Bangalore to transfer the money to him.

The code words used between the hawala operators and Sarabjot were: "Patel has sent the honey. The honey is ready to eat, send the honey through Dhanlakshmi collection so that it reaches the city."

That has been interpreted as:"Patil has sent the money. It is ready to be transferred through hawala operators to Sarabjot."

CBI also has proof of the phone numbers. Patil was instructed to call on 9811996666 which is registered in Sarabjot's father-in-law's name. During the episode Sarabjot talked to a close aide on the number 98384520 who is said to be in Rajasthan and is suspected to have played a key role.

From the available facts it looks like the accused left no stone unturned to escape the police. But if CBI is to be believed, no criminal plan is foolproof, including this one.
