The Union Cabinet after several rounds of consultations has cleared the prohibition of unfair practices in technical, medical and educational institutions. Universities Bill, the proposed law seeks to make educational malpractices like charging capitation fee, overpricing of prospectus and brochers opacity in admission tests as criminal offence.
Those found guilty can be punished three years of imprisonment and a fine upto Rs 50 lakh.
To ensure that there is speedy disposal of educational disputes, the government has given a go-ahead to setting up of tribunals dealing exclusively with litigation arising out of educational disputes. Both state and central tribunals are to be set-up headed by retired judges the verdict of these tribunals can be challenged in designated high courts.
