Hyderabad: In one of the biggest international cyber theft cases in Vizag, a 27-year-old HSBC call center employee has been arrested for a fraud of Rs 47 lakh. The Task Force and Central Crime station personnel, in a joint operation on Sunday, took Rahul Kumar into custody two months after the bank lodged a complaint against him for duping a Greek customer, Eva Pagony.
Sub-Inspector Task Force, Ananda Reddy said, "Rahul Kumar was an employee at the HSBC call centre. The caller Eva Pagony accidentally revealed her pin number to him and he misused it."
Pagony holds an account in the bank's Dubai branch. On September 15, 2008, she made a call enquiring about her account details, which was routed to the Vishakapatnam call centre and was received by Rahul.
She accidentally revealed her pin number as well, which Rahul took advantage of. He subsequently opened a fake account in Vizag and transferred Rs 47 lakh in five transactions from Vizag and Kolkatta over a period of two months.
He quit his job in November, raising suspicion among his employers, who then lodged a complaint. Rahul while accepting his crime says there are more people involved.
"The transfer cannot be done without the consent of the manager. Four thousand employees like me work here. If it was so easy, then everyone would have done a fraud like this," said Rahul Kumar.
But the police disagrees, saying he doesn't want to bear the entire burden of the crime. Nevertheless, further verifications will be conducted based on Rahul's allegations.
