Camp gets Team India rolling

Bangalore: All play and no work certainly hasn't made them dull boys. After the rained out tri-series in Sri Lanka, the boys are back in Bangalore, but this time for a "rolling camp", another brainchild of lateral thinking coach Greg Chappell.

The team has been divided into three groups of five players each. Every set of five players gets three days of undivided attention.

All this, ahead of the tri-nation series with Australia and the West Indies in Malaysia beginning on September 12. So what's the rationale?

Chappell says, "The rationale behind the camp is, the first two camps we had before Sri Lanka was about leadership and team building development and about the group, whereas having the rolling camp is more about developing the individual players, looking at their personal needs, how by making them better we can help make the team better."

And Chappell certainly didn't leave any stone unturned to do just that. The first five set of players included Ajit Agarkar, Yuvraj Singh, Irfan Pathan, Ramesh Powar and Mohammed Kaif. Each of them got their individual attention, and will, over the next two days as well.

Chappell adds, "Bowlers need to develop their batting and some of the part-time bowlers need to develop their bowling so that will be part of it as well."

The second batch will see Munaf Patel, M S Dhoni, R P Singh, Suresh Raina and Sreesanth take the baton on September 2.

And finally the last set which includes captain Rahul Dravid, Virender Sehwag, Sachin Tendulkar, Harbhajan Singh, Dinesh Mongia and V R V Singh.

A camera will be used to later analyse their problems. But here's something new, an elevated ball dispenser to tackle those tall fast bowlers!

"We've got a tall bowling machine out there so obviously there are certain teams in the world that have height advantage in their fast bowlers. And we are trying to simulate as much as possible, the sort of things that we expect to see in the next few months in various tournaments," adds Chappell.

The Indian team is on a roll, not quite when it comes to the number of matches they've played, but certainly if their training sessions are any indicators.

If the last camp was all about team building and outward bound learning, this time though, it's the individual who's the focus.

But then that's the Chappell way. And if it means a better team, then why not?
