Campaigning over, Modi confident of BJP victory

Vadodara: As the high-pitched campaign drew to a close in Gujarat on Friday, voices got louder and attacks sharper.

With focus on Central Gujarat, Congress unleashed its star campaigner Rahul Gandhi in this Modi stronghold.

During a roadshow in Vadodara, Rahul sought to match Modi word for word, “The Government in Gujarat is one that hides behind lies and thinks that if lies are spoken loudly and repeatedly, it will become the truth. Vote the Congress to power, Vote for the truth,” said Rahul Gandhi.

As Rahul pitched in on the streets, in Delhi, the Congress knocked the EC's doors over BJP's ads accusing Congress of delaying execution of Mohammad Afzal.

The Congress said the ads could incite communal tension and were in violation of the model code.

But the Congress has not lagged behind in the ad war, the party has come out with ads of release of Masood Azhar and others during the Kandhar hijack, all to counter Modi's charges that it's soft on terror.

On the other hand there was no stopping Modi. Despite the EC notice on Sohrabuddin, Modi remained defiant and lost no opportunity to taunt Congress and in particular Sonia Gandhi.

At the end of it, the CM remained as confident as ever. "Campaigning is over and I am confident that BJP will win with majority votes,” Modi said.

It’s been Modi versus the rest in the Gujarat elections. Even the BJP has been watching from the sidelines as Modi took centrestage.

Central Gujarat has been Modi's backyard. In 2002, of the 45 seats, BJP won 36 while Congress took just 9. Congress hopes to stem the tide this time.

As campaigning for the Gujarat elections drew to a close, political parties went in for that one final push. If Rahul Gandhi was the Congress' star campaigner on the final day, Modi continued to lead the BJP's charge.

At 5 pm on Sunday, the peoples' choice will be made.
