Monday is the last day to fill up forms for admissions in Delhi University and as dates for cutoffs and admissions close in, CNN-IBN explores some recession-proof job opportunities for you in our special series Campus Calling. The first in our pick is a career in politics which is not as inaccessible as it seems.
New Delhi: Politics has small beginnings and Delhi University Students Union President Nupur Sharma realises that. She is raising a cry about potable water in DU colleges – an issue that was part of her election manifesto.
The 24-year-old law student has a clear vision of what she changes she wants in the campus during her tenure. “I don't see why our colleges are still so filthy and you talk of world class university when we don't even get basic facilities in the colleges,” she said.
Nupur joined ABVP, the student wing of the BJP, while still in her undergraduate course. Despite coming from a non-political family, she took to campus politics with ease and after fighting her first election last year, she is eyeing the big league.
“I would honestly love to be in the think tank because I am in the system and I think I have a good understanding of the system,” Nupur said.
So it is time we read the writing on the wall. Politics is not as inaccessible as it seems and this job for all seasons has more and more avenues opening up, especially for the professionally trained. Like 28-year-old PHD student at Jawaharlal Nehru University Harshvardhan Shyam who got a taste of realpolitik this General Election.
Harshvardhan, who is the General Secretary of NSUI, headed the media co-ordination cell of Congress MP Ajay Maken's election campaign.
“My main job was to travel with Mr Maken when he was campaigning or going for his pad yatra. The media had to coordinate with me,” Harshwardhan said.
Nupur and Harshwardhan might work with opposing ideologies but their dream of joining active politics is common. With no pre-requisites for opting for a career in politics, the profession only demands a will to work and the right intent.
So this academic session, you too could find an opportunity in politics.
