New Delhi: The crime branch of the Delhi Police has arrested nine members of a very active and notorious gang of car theives.

It is now known that this gang was reponsible for stealing more than 1000 cars in the last fifteen years.

One of the accused, Ravi who is aged 38 yrs, is the most wanted auto-lifter in Delhi.

Another member of the notorious gang, Moti-ur Rahman who is aged 28 yrs is the main receiver of stolen vehicles in the north east part of the metropolis.

The arrest of these two kingpins has all the trappings of a Hollywood crime flick. Ravi's gang has been responsible for the theft of more than one thousand automobiles in the last 15 years.

The men used to operate in a highly sophisticated manner. While Moti-ur Rahman, the receiver was permanently based in Assam, Ravi the auto-lifter was responsible for ‘sourcing’ them from the capital.

There were others whose job it was either to make fake registration papers or to simply drive down the stolen cars to different north eastern states.

The favourite targets were luxury vehicles. Officials say that the stolen cars were often sold to buyers in Assam or Nagaland within 72 hrs of the theft.

Additional CP of Crime detection department, Satyendra Garg said, “They would often have documents to show that these were personal belongings of BSF, CRPF and military personnel.”

Ravi was arrested two years ago but later jumped parole. Meanwhile, his gang continued to operate with impunity.

“They were so professional that as one would be arrested, all the others would be alerted and would go underground. Thats why it was difficult to arrest them,” said ACP Garg.

The cops finally nabbed the kingpins after an elaborate surveillance operation at Moti-ur-Rahman's village in Assam.

But they warn this is just the tip of the iceberg.

Over 30 members of the gang are still on the run and a huge collection of stolen cars is yet to be recovered.
