Kozhikode: Twelve-year-old Akash may never be able to walk again. And it’s all because of the carelessness of a few policemen.
Akash’s legs had to be amputated after an auto rickshaw, which was being towed away by the police, fell on him.
The accident happened because the police were not using the right method to tow the rickshaw.
However, after initial attempts to hush-up the matter, the police have now admitted to their negligence.
“Its negligence on the part of police. There is no doubt about the fact that they used plastic ropes instead of chains to tow away the vehicle, which slipped and crushed the boy. We have suspended two policemen,” says Commissioner of Police, Calicut, Balram Kumar Upadhayaya.
The accident has left Akash crippled from below the waist. His family says that his legs had to be amputated to save his life.
Initially, the family was too stunned to speak, but now, as help pours in from NGOs and the public, they feel slightly hopeful.
“In the beginning there was no one to help us. But now since the media has taken up the matter, the government says they will help us,” says Akash's grandfather, Govindan.
Meanwhile, doctors say that Akash will only be able to walk with artificial limbs, which will cost around Rs 15 lakh.
As of now, the lower middle class family has received only Rs 1 lakh in compensation so far. But they are now banking on whatever help comes their way.
