Goa: Cartoonist Mario Miranda exits life's canvas at 85

Goa: One of India's foremost cartoonist and illustrators Mario de Miranda, who drew Goa for the world and drew the world to Goa, passed away in his ancestral home near Panaji on Sunday after a prolonged illness.

According to reports, the 85-year-old legendary cartoonist died in his sleep. Known for his vivid portrayal of Goa and his gentle political satire, Mario's cartoons grew popular with the 'Illustrated Weekly' of India and with characters like 'Miss Fonseca' and 'Miss Nimbupani'.

One of his most memorable works includes 'Inside Goa' by Manohar Malgaonkar - an illustrated narrative of the history of Goa.

"I am deeply sadden and devastated that I have lost a friend, the artist community of India has lost a fine talented artist, Goa has lost it's best ambassador ever," fashion designer Wendell Rodricks said.

Mario's cartoons were a regular feature of many newspapers including the 'Times of India', 'Economic Times' and magazines like 'Femina'.

His works were also featured international publications like 'MAD' and 'PUNCH'. Mario who was awarded the Padma Bhushan in 2002, and Padma Shri in 1988 will forever be remembered for his memorable illustrations of the laid back life in Goa and quirky Goan characters.
