'Goddess' Raje puts MLA in tight spot, BJP sees red

Jaipur: It was an effort to elevate Rajasthan Chief Minister Vasundhara Raje from royalty to divinity.

But the poster released in May, depicting Raje as Goddess Annapurna has only embarrassed Raje and her party.

The Jodhpur police have now acted on a complaint which claimed that the poster hurt religious sentiments.

“A case has been registered in Udaimandir Police Station. Since the matter will be investigated by Crime Branch the case file has been sent to CID Crime Branch,” said Jodhpur ASP Sawai Singh Godara.

The complaint against the priest who made the poster and the MLA who released it had been filed by Sheetal Kanwar, wife of senior BJP leader Jaswant Singh. The MLA, however, continues to defend her poster.

“Woman anyway is a form of Goddess, if I have released the calendar there's nothing wrong that I've done. Sheetal Kanwar has raised this issue only she knows why but I've not done anything wrong,” said Jodhpur BJP MLA Suryakanta Vyas.

The Jodhpur police registered the case only after Kanwar moved court again two weeks back.

Kanwar's complaint in June had revealed the extent of the rift between the Jaswant Singh camp and the Vasundhara Raje camp in the Rajasthan BJP. And the rift doesn't seem to have narrowed.

The tug of war between two power camps within the BJP in Rajasthan looks like it’s all set to intensify. As the party gears up for Assembly Elections in Rajasthan next year it'll be a huge challenge before the BJP to first get its divided house in order.
