New Delhi: Delhi Police claim to have cracked a kidnapping and murder case of August 2008. The victim, 17-year-old Chirag Khandelwal, was killed and his body brutally severed by his abductors.

Police say the alleged murderers of Chirag, 27-year-old-men, Gaurav and Mahender Giri kidnapped and brutally killed him in August 2008. The duo allegedly lured Chirag to an unknown location on August 17, under the pretext that he knew questions that would figure in Chirag's Class XII board exam.

The kidnappers then made a ransom demand for Rs 50 lakh. But when Chirag's parents approached the police for help, they panicked.

Fearing identification Chirag's kidnappers, not only did they murder him but severed his body into different parts before disposing it off.

Meanwhile, the police launched a massive search and it was finally through sustained technical surveillance that the accused were arrested eight months later.

"We have recovered the victim's head. His watch and spectacles have also been recovered from the accused," said DCP Special Cell, Alok Kumar.

Police also say Chirag's kidnapping was planned well in advance.

"One of the two took admission in the same coaching centre as Chirag so that he could get close to him," said Kumar.

Also, to avoid detection, they even made ransom calls from different locations. Both accused Gaurav and Mahender Giri have now been sent to police custody.
