Bangalore: The Indian Institutes of Management (IIMs) give only 20 per cent weightage to the Common Admission Test (CAT) score and it’s actually the academic record and how one performs in an interview that gets one through to the esteemed institute.

So, IIMs have made public on what basis its students are chosen but here's the surprise: CAT scores are just one-fifth of the criteria for admissions. Forty per cent weightage is given for class X, XII and bachelor's scores.

Work experience is given weightage too but it’s mostly performance in the group discussion and interview that counts which is up to 35 per cent, plus 5 per cent weightage is there if you have done a chartered accountancy course.

“We hope candidates will be clear now about the admissions. We have been getting a lot of RTI queries from the students and these enquiries are growing in number,” Chairman, post-graduate programme, Professor Ganesh N Prabhu said.

The information on admission criteria was made public after visually challenged student, Vaishnavi Kasturi who couldn’t make it to IIM Bangalore despite her high score, had filed petitions under the Right to Information Act.

Now, her RTI petition has gone a long way in making things easier for students.

“I'm happy IIM has become a little transparent. I have been asking for information for six months and now they are ready to share it. Students should know what they have to plan before they take up CAT,” said Vaishnavi who is now a student of MATS School of Management Studies.

And for all you future CAT aspirants, the message is clear – better start studying for your class X exams.
