Caught and let-off: this don knows how to get away

CNN-IBN

New Delhi/ Mumbai: Anees Ibrahim, brother of underworld don Dawood Ibrahim and an accused in the 1993 serial blasts, has been detained several times but always escaped deportation to India.

He has reportedly beem detained at the Jeddah airport but Indian agencies failed to confirm from Saudi Arabia till late in the night whether Anees has been arrested or not.

Mumbai's Joint Commissioner of Police (Crime) Rakesh Maria has confirmed three persons have been detained in Jeddah. "We are trying to verify their identity through our sources but who these persons are we presently do not know," he said.

Sources say that they include Dawood's henchmen Chota Dawood and Saleem Chiploon. India has formally requested Interpol to verify the reports.

Anees is a key suspect in the 1993 Mumbai bomb blasts which killed nearly 300 people. He was involved in hatching the conspiracy as well as dispatching consignments of AK-56 and grenades to Mumbai. He has an Interpol red corner notice and is wanted in nearly 70 cases of murder, attempt to murder, kidnapping for ransom and extortion.

Anees was detained by the Dubai authorities in 1996 but was let off for want of evidence. In 1996, he was briefly arrested in UAE on a narcotics-related charge but released.

He was detained for the murder of rival gangster Irfan Goga in 1997 but again he was left off.

He was detained in Dubai in 2002 after which he was bailed out and deported back to Pakistan despite the CBI sending an extradition request.

Even if he has been arrested, India might not lay its hands on the Anees because there is no extradition treaty with Saudi Arabia.
