Tribals live life of refugees in Chhattisgarh

New Delhi: Caught in the crossfire, tribals in Dantewada district of Chhattisgarh are under pressure to aid the Government’s operation against Naxalites.

Like hundreds of tribals, Linga Ram, a Muriya tribal from Sameli in Dantewada is on the run for three months. He is under pressure to join the war against Naxalites, for without people like him there is no chance of the Government winning over the Naxals.

But one can say no at his own cost. Linga alleges that when he refused to help the Government against Naxals they shut him in a room for many days.

However, when CNN-IBN questioned about Linga’s confinement and torture, the police insisted they were only helping his cause.

It was only after the Bilaspur High Court's intervention that Linga got out from the police station, but he was a marked man not just by the local police, but also by the Naxalites.

So when he returned home, the Naxals came looking out for him.

“They called me for questioning and let me go after some days,” Linga told CNN-IBN.

However, his troubles didn’t end there. After the Naxals, police again called him.

“The security forces came and knocked at every door. They asked about my father and me,” Linga says.

Like Linga, thousands of tribal men are fleeing their own land. They walk through jungles in the night to cross over to Andhra Pradesh making the choice of life over land.
