Caught molesting woman, J&K jawan kills himself

CNN-IBN

Kangan (Jammu and Kashmir): One person was killed and another injured when an Army jawan opened indiscriminate fire from his service rifle on police and protestors after being allegedly caught moleting a girl in Kangan, 60 km off Srinagar on Thursday.

Sepoy Ranjit Singh of 24 Rashtriya Rifles panicked after being caught red-handed killing a civilian Abdul Rehman and injuring several in his nervous rage.

However, he was shortly outnumbered by the angry civilians and later shot himself.

“The army people molest our women. There is no need of an army post here. They are

here only to rape our women,” says a resident.

The Army claims Singh knew the woman who was allegedly molested.

An Army spokesperson also said that while the two were meeting, a mob surrounded the place. He did not rule out the possibility of the jawan opening fire in a desperate bid to escape from the mob.

Sources said that massive demonstrations continued in the area with more and more people joining the protestors and raising anti-army slogans.

PTI reports the protestors also blocked the Srinagar-Leh highway after the incident. The agency also reports the girl was reportedly taken into custody as protestors tried to lynch her.

She told police that she had gone to Kangan to submit an application for admission into a nursing course when the soldier tried to rape her.

The incident comes as an embarrassment for the Army close on the heels of last week's incident at bandipura where two jawans of the 57 Rashtriya Rifles unit were smeared in black and paraded naked for allegedly attempting to rape a 17 year old.

Faced as they are with a spate of suicides and accusations of rape and molestation in Kashmir, the army top brass has a lot of soul-searching to do.
