Mumbai: Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) leader and former home minister, Padamsinh Patil, has been arrested for murder. A close confidant of NCP chief Sharad Pawar and MP from Osmanabad, Patil is charged with killing of a Congress leader in 2006 in Navi Mumbai.
Meanwhile, Padamsinh Patil is pleading innocence; however, the arrested NCP MP from Osmanabad is not getting much support even from his party colleagues. Padamsinh was arrested by the CBI on Saturday for his alleged involvement in the murder of Congress leader Pawanraje Nimbalkar. Padamsinh is known to be in close proximity with NCP chief Sharad Pawar. With elections round the corner, an embarrassed NCP leadership has gone into a wait-and-watch mode.
NCP chief Sharad Pawar said, "As an NCP head, I will not take any stand as it will jeopardise the investigations."
Maharashtra home minister Jayant Patil said, “Till the final decision is out, it is not right to target any one particular party. It is not right to comment on the issue at this point and time.”
Pawanraje Nimbalkar was shot dead at Navi Mumbai in 2006.
It was the confessional statement of prime accused Parasmal Jain that nailed Padamsinh Patil.
Jain told the CBI that he was told to kill Nimbalkar at Padamsinh Patil's behest.
Padamsingh was allegedly angry that Nimbalkar helped expose fraudulent deals involving his sugar mills.
For Nimbalkar's family, its been a long hard battle for justice.
Omprakash Nimbalkar said, “Murder driven by political reason... government and police officials were not paying attention which is why we had to get into politics, CBI has been on it for 3-4 months...at least now they've made an arrest.”
During election season, the arrest of a former home minister comes as a major setback for the NCP's image in the state.
In the days ahead, the CBI will have to build a watertight case on this politically explosive issue.
