New Delhi: Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) Director AP Singh and Central Vigilance Commissioner (CVC) Pradeep Kumar met Prime Minister Manmohan Singh in Parliament to discuss the Lokpal Bill.

Sources say that CBI Director AP Singh conveyed to the Prime Minister to ensure that the autonomy of the investigating agency is protected. He reportedly objected to the imposition of a timeline for investigations to be completed as per the provisions of the Janlokpal Bill proposed by anti-corruption crusader Anna Hazare and his associates.

The CBI has also opposed the supervision format being suggested by varios political parties and the proposed Lokpal Bill. CVC Pradeep Kumar also spoke about the administrative mechanism and pointed out that the organisation was setup on Supreme Court's directive.

Sources say the Congress-led United Progressive Alliance Government is considering bringing the prosecution wing of the CBI under the Lokpal.

The Government is trying to build a consensus with the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on keeping the CBI's prosecution wing CBI under the Lokpal.

Sources say the BJP is unwilling to commit itself to a fixed position on the inclusion of the CBI under the Lokpal and the party is waiting for a formal communication from Government before finalising its position on the issue.

However, Hazare and his team want CBI's investigation wing under the Lokpal Bill. Parliament Standing Committee's Lokpal Bill draft already has the CBI's prosecution power under the bill. The political parties are believed to wield influence note for the investigation wing of the CBI.
