Cash for justice scam: CBI, CJI face-off

New Delhi: The judiciary and the country's premier investigating agency have been pitted against each other over the clean chit to Punjab and Haryana High Court judge Justice Nirmal Yadav, who was allegedly involved in an cash for justice scam.

Chief Justice of India KG Balakrishnan has been criticised by the Punjab and Haryana Bar Association for the clean chit to Justice Yadav.

The cash for justice scam case was closed by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), which says it did so after CJI Balakrishnan didn't give his assent to go ahead.

CJI Balakrishnan, however, denied even having seen the CBI report on the scam.

However, documents available with CNN-IBN show that CJI Balakrishnan was consulted on the matter.

The matter was discussed between the Law Minister and the CJI, who observed that no action is required in the matter.

Justice Yadav was given a clean chit in the Rs 15 lakh cash for justice scam.

The scam had broken out in August 2008, when a bag containing money was mistakenly delivered by the clerk of the then additional advocate general of the Haryana High Court at the house of Justice Nirmaljit Kaur.

Later, it was found that the money was meant for Justice Nirmal Yadav.
