Click to play videoNew Delhi: After CNN-IBN revealed that Prime Minister Manmohan Singh's representative on the Commonwealth Games Organising Committee, Jarnail Singh, cleared the time scoring deal, the Central Burau of Investigatin (CBI) has come out to defend him.
The CBI has said that Commonwealth games organising committee CEO Jarnail Singh's role was limited in the time scoring and result equipment scam.
Jarnail Singh's role was limited to signing files, claimed the CBI.
Sources add that the CBI's FIR on time scoring scam blamed only Kalmadi and his close aides Lalit Bhanot and VK Verma.
Kalmadi, who was sacked as the chairman of the Commonwealth Games Organising Committee, has been arrested in the time scoring scam by the CBI, but CNN-IBN has uncovered a totally different angle to the case. Kalmadi reportedly conspired to favour a private firm in Switzerland by awarding the contract at an inflated cost of Rs 141 crore.
But reacting to the CNN-IBN story, Jarnail Singh said that the timing equipment purchase was delayed so much that there was no option but to buy it the rate given by the vendors.
"It is similar to air ticket, if you purchase it last minute you have to pay more, if you are purchasing 2 months before, you get cheaper. But the fact that most of the contracts were much behind the Games master schedule. As I said, the TSR had been done by 2008 so that the vendor can come here and take the measurements and cabling can be done," said Singh.
Talking on the Jarnail Singh issue, Congress spokesperson Jayanthi Natarajan said, "We have always taken action…we will do whatever needs to be done. The CWG is being handled by CBI, which is an independent organisation...and law will take its own course".
On the other hand, BJP spokesperson Ravi Shankar Prasad said, "CNN-IBN did a good job. Kalmadi not the only one involved, others should also be probed".
However, the CBI is now concentrating only on Suresh Kalmadi, and said that Kalmadi is likely to be booked in overlays and Queen's baton's relay scam as well.
