New Delhi: Union Law Minister H R Bharadwaj has denied the government had a role in the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) deciding to withdraw the name of Italian businessman Ottavio Quattrocchi, the sole surviving suspect in the Bofors scam, from its list of wanted people.
“The CBI is an autonomous body and it doesn’t work under the Ministry of Law. We (the Ministry) are legal advisors to the Government and if any advice is sought, we give it fairly and independently,” Bharadwaj told CNN-IBN.
“The Attorney General is a constitutional position and independent of the government. If any organ or department of the state seeks legal opinion, he has to give it independent of the government’s view. The CBI deals with the Interpol independently—interference is not possible,” he said.
The CBI has asked Interpol to take the Quattrocchi, considered to be close to late Rajiv Gandhi, off the list of people against whom there is a red corner notice.
Opposition parties alleged on Tuesday the CBI is shielding Quattrocchi under pressure from the Congress-led UPA government.
