New Delhi: With the kidney kingpin now in the CBI net, the agency has been granted almost a fortnight of custody to interrogate Amit Kumar.

After a marathon international hunt and a high-profile arrest, the CBI is finally down to business, having been granted 12 days custody of the kidney racket mastermind Amit Kumar.

Amit was deported to India from Nepal on Saturday, after being arrested in Chitwan.

“We have taken remand for a sustained interrogation of Amit Kumar. He'll be produced in court on February 23rd,” said CBI spokesperson, G Mohanty.

“Our sources in the CBI have told us that Dr Amit has named a top bureaucrat of UP during interrogation. If this is anything to go by, more skeletons are likely to tumble out of the closet in the coming days,” Mohanty told reporters.

Six teams have been formed to investigate the kidney scam.

The teams shall look into the roles of the donors, recipients, middlemen, hospital staff and the parts played by Amit and Jeevan Kumar and co-accused Dr Upendra Aggarwal, said Mohanty.

The CBI is also likely to seek permission to question Upendra Aggarwal, who is currently under the Moradabad police's custody.
