CBI probing Vice Prez candidate

New Delhi: The Central Bureau of Investigation is investigating an allegation that Rasheed Masood, the United National Progressive Alliance’s candidate for the Vice President’s post, wrongly helped a man in getting admission in a medical college.

CNN IBN has learnt that Masood, 60, has been charge-sheeted by the CBI and a criminal case is pending against him. Masood was Union Minister of State for Health in the V P Singh government when he allegedly helped a certain Pawar Sandeep Trilok Chand in getting admission into Lucknow’s King George Medical College. Chand did not write the entrance test.

Masood, a Samajwadi Party MP from Saharanpur in UP, admitted the CBI is investigating him but says the allegation is biased. “The charge-sheet is there but it was politically motivated,” he said.

Masood is embroiled in other controversies too. CNN-IBN has documents which prove that Masood bought land reserved for Dalits in his constituency of Saharanpur and later it transferred in the name of his wife. Masood has denied the allegations. “This is totally false. Can anyone prove this?" he says.

Masood’s son-in-law Sadad has been charged under Section 420 (cheating). When he was in jail, Sadad gave Rashid’s home as his address. Masood’s son Shahbaan is also charged under Section 420 in Haridwar. CNN-IBN has copies of both FIRs.

The eight-party UNPA or the Third Front selected Masood, a five-time MP from Saharanpur, for the Vice-Presidential election on July 16. Masood has little chance to win the election, as UNPA, which is made up of regional parties, does not have the numbers or influence in the electoral college.

The UPA has selected has selected minorities commission chief Hamid Ansari for the election and the BJP has fielded former Rajya Sabha deputy chief Najma Heptullah.
