New Delhi: The Madhya Pradesh government on Friday handed over Sub-Inspector Chetna Sharma's murder case to CBI.
On November 30, 2005, Sharma's bullet-ridden body was found by her maid servant at her residence in Bhind in suspicious circumstances.
After initial investigations, Superintendent of Police Raja Babu Singh, who allegedly was found involved in the case, was sent on long leave.
CID IG Reena Mitra is presently in Bhind investigating the case.
The Madhya Pradesh police have not established whether it was murder - as alleged by Sharma’s family - or a case of suicide.
The case timeline
A CID inquiry was ordered into the case on November 30, but the investigations remained under cover until the morning of December 22, when a letter allegedly written by Chetna, to the National Woman's Commission dated November 29, was found.
In the letter, she claims that the District Superintendent of Police Raja Babu Singh was sexually harassing her and had even threatened to kill her.
The CID is now trying to establish the credibility of the letter, as it is not handwritten. Chetna's father is alleging that her daughter has been murdered by Raja Babu, but the Madhya Pradesh government is trying to influence investigations.
