CCTV footage captures Gujarat 'car bombs'

CNN-IBN

New Delhi: The Gujarat police claim to have got the photograph of one of the four stolen, explosive-laden cars that were found abandoned in Ahmedabad and Surat.

The car was photographed by the CCTV camera at Pune toll tax gate as part of a routine drive. It is not clear if the driver was captured in the photograph.

The picture has now been passed on to investigating agencies in Mumbai and Ahmedabad. The cars were stolen from Navi Mumbai in the second week of July and were driven to Gujarat via Pune.

Police are also probing an underworld angle to the blasts.

Meanwhile, Surat Police Commisioner R M S Brar says the terrorists possibly got help from locals in Ahmedabad and Surat. “We are not sure what the terrorists had planned but it was reasonably serious. We will ensure that there is no possibility for such things to take place in future. Surat is an important part of Gujarat and if the entire country is under a threat then Surat certainly needs to be taken into consideration. There were also some minor threats two months back and we were on high alert . It seems these bombs were planted in Surat before the blasts happened in Ahmedabad but they were only detected later. Despite all the effort we have are limitations but we will ensure that this does not happen in future. The chips used in Bangalore and Surat bombs were similar but we do not know if there is any other similarity between the two events .We do not know yet who is responsible for all this but we are investigating. There is certainly a local hand supporting these mishaps,” he said.
