Ceasefire breach halts farming along LOC

Srinagar: As incidents of ceasefire violations and infiltration increase along the Line of Control (LOC) in Jammu and Kashmir days before the ceasefire agreement, border residents like Prithpal Singh are feeling the heat.

Prithpal Singh, who has 1200 kanals of land beyond the fence near Samba, has stopped farming there and every night lives in uncertainty.

Prithpal Singh said, “Yahan DIG bhi mar gaye.. roz firing hoti hai. (A DIG was killed here last month. It has started all over again. We cannot sleep every night…with fear of this firing).

India and Pakistan signed the ceasefire agreement in November 2003, but prior to that due to heavy border firing more that 60,000 residents had been displaced.

Even since 2003, the ceasefire has been violated over 129 times. In this January alone, over 10 incidents of firing and violations have taken place.

The army and the state government feel that this consistent firing could have wider implications.

Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah said, “They have violated the ceasefire, cut the fence, used IED. It could affect the dialogue process.”

As both countries wait to resume dialogue, maybe quiet at the borders could be of some help.
