Mumbai: After getting an overwhelming response in the US, acclaimed actor and Bharatnatyam dancer Shobhana's dance-ballet titled Maya Ravan premiered in India at Mumbai’s Nehru Center on Saturday.
The actor/danseuse plays Ravana, the ten-headed demon king of Lanka, in the dance-drama ballet. The performance attracted not just classical dance enthusiasts, but even Bollywood celebrities.
Hema Malini, an acclaimed dancer herself, said, “She's a very creative dancer and tries to bring about something new all the time.”
Vidya Balan said, “She's known to experiment with her work and they say it’s like a Broadway musical.”
“I’m sure it’s much better than that because our culture has lot more to offer,” the Kismat Konnection star added.
Juhi Chawla was all praises for Shobhana. “She's a wonderful actor, I’ve seen her on stage doing ballet. She becomes the dance. So I’m expecting a lovely evening,” she said.
The musical also features narrations by Naseeruddin Shah, Milind Soman, Jackie Shroff, Revathy and Tabu.
“I’ve done something like this for the first time,” Jackie said. “I hope I’ve done justice to the concept, I’m here to see how it looks.”
Milind Soman said, “I haven’t done much. It’s just a voiceover. I did what Shobhana asked me to do.”
Maya Ravan is truly a classical musical ballet with a dash of Bollywood.
