Govt plans modern education for madrassa students

CNN-IBN

New Delhi: The Centre has announced steps to push the welfare of the minorities. The government has promised aid to states for modernising madrassas. It has asked states to introduce subjects like mathematics and science in madrassas.

The Centre has sanctioned about Rs 50,000 per year for each teacher hired to teach these subjects.

The Centre also wants more madrassas for girls. The central Government has asked all the states to conduct a survey on the Urdu-speaking population.

The availability of schools in Muslim-dominated areas will be a crucial point of the survey. The schemes are being implemented under the prime minister's 15-point programme for minorities.

The ministry of HRD has conducted a detailed review at a secretary-level meeting with representatives of 16 states having a sizeable Urdu-speaking population on the status of appointment of Urdu teachers and modernisation of madrassas.

During the review, it was found that though substantial funds had been released to the states for appointing Urdu teachers, the funds were either not fully used by some states or were lying unspent in other states, an official release said today.

It was decided to provide aid to any area, even if it is smaller than a block, where 25 per cent or more of the population is Urdu-speaking.

Urging the states to forward their comments on the proposed revision of the scheme to modernise madrassas during the 11th Plan, the ministry said proposals for 2007-08, based on a proper assessment of the Urdu-speaking population, should be sent within a fortnight.

The outlay for the current year under the scheme to modernise madrassas is Rs 55 crore. The expenditure during the 10th Five-Year Plan on the combined schemes of area intensive and madrassa modernisation was Rs 142.27 lakh.
