New Delhi: After stirring up a hornets’ nest with its handling of the Ram Sethu case, the government is now in no mood to take chances.
The UPA has now decided to take its time over filing affidavits in a case which challenges the implementation of the Sachar Committee report.
Sources have told CNN-IBN that within the government it was considered a potential political hot potato, and after burning its fingers with the Ram Sethu affidavits, a clearance on the new affidavit was sought at the highest level – from the Prime Minister's Office.
However, approaching the PMO caused a delay in the filing of the affidavit in the Dellhi High court and upset with the delay, the court asked the Centre to pay a fine of Rs 20,000.
The government, on its part, readily agreed to pay the fine, and has literally bought time to file a foolproof affidavit.
"We took four months to prepare the petition. We expected same preparedness from the government,” said the petitioner’s counsel, P N Lekhi.
The papers were finally filed on Tuesday, with the government trying to explain how the schemes based on the Sachar report are based on solid data and would benefit all minorities, not just Muslims.
