Mumbai: Over the past few weeks, the monsoon got Mumbaikars in a tight spot.

As the chaos in Mumbai has come to a little rest, the Centre is now giving the city Rs 12, 000 crore to rehaul the city's drainage system.

The Centre has asked the state government not to expect more funds for the project. The funds will be disbursed over a three-year period, in installments of 400 cr each year.

Mumbai's civic body for the past two years has been working on doubling the capacity of city's 100 -year-old drainage system

The civic body is now relieved as it has got the windfall its been waiting for. The funds will for sure help mobilise their efforts.

Municipal Commissioner, Jairaj Phatak says, "Till now we could only take 200 mm, after this sanction our capacity will be double."

The project is called 'Brimstowad' and it will involve building nallahs and culverts, widening and deepening the city's rivers, and setting up more pumping stations.

However, town planners say that the ambitious project is short-sighted and will provide only partial relief.

"Any amount of money is always welcome. But what happens to the smaller lanes? They are not even covered in 'Brimstowad' project," says town planner, Chandrashekhar Prabhu.

Even as the funds begin to pour into the city, the administration continues to face a problem even more chronic and deep-rooted than its unsatisfactory drainage which is the cynicism of the public.

"I don't think the funds will be utilized, Mumbai will continue to flood,” says a Management Executive, Radhika Shah.

Meanwhile another management executive, Dron Jadeja says "They wont' do anything to the drainage system. They'll just jazz it up in minor ways and say they can't make it like New York."
