Centre to open 3 mega relief camps in flood-hit Bihar

New Delhi: The Union Government will set up three mega relief camps in the worst-affected districts apart from the 257 existing relief camps for the flood victims in Bihar.

The government has also relaxed provisions of NREGA to provide livlihood to the flood-hit people and two task forces will be set up to assess and provide relief.

These decisions were taken in a high-level meeting chaired by Union Home Secretary Madhukar Gupta on Friday.

The meeting was also attended by officials from Bihar Government.

So far 10 lakh people have been evecuated but only 3 lakh have been accomodated in relief camps.

Gupta also advised the Water Resources Ministry and the Bihar Government to expedite repair of the breached portion of the embankment on the Kosi river, an official release said.

He also suggested that a Petroleum Ministry official visit the affected areas to ensure availability of petro-products and plug loopholes, if any.

The Petroleum Ministry has provided additional 10,000 kilolitres of kerosene and will give free LPG to the relief camps.

The meeting was also informed that evacuation, wherever required, has already been done.

The Union Home Secretary said drinking water and sanitation issues now need to be under focus and suggested more expert interaction and ground level visits for the purpose.

While vaccination at the camps will start shortly, 300 tonnes of medicines were supplied on Friday. Besides, 600 tonnes of GI sheets have been made available for erecting tents.

The Defence Ministry informed that 5,000 of personnel are deployed and 38 mobile medical teams are operating.

The Rural Development Ministry has allotted 58,000 additional Indira Awas Yojana units to Bihar for the flood-affected people.
