Chief accused Pramod Muthalik and his Ram Sene boys can rest assured that the debate has now moved on to other quarters.
A war of sorts has broken out with the Central team sent by the Minister for Women and Child Development, Renuka Chaudhury and the National Commission for Women (NCW) giving diametrically different reports.
It's open battle now between National Commission for Women member Nirmala Venkatesh and Women and Child Welfare Minister Renuka Chaudhury. And they are sparring over who was to blame for the Mangalore pub attack.
"I visited the pub and there was no security. NCW will recommend the cancellation of their licence," said Nirmala Venkatesh of the NCW who had visited the crime scene soon after the assaults.
Renuka Chaudhury's ministry finds itself in an embarrassing spot over the NCW report and remarks which seem to find fault with the women or the pub owners rather than the attackers.
"Nirmala Venkatesh should be more judicious about what she says. I am entitled to send another team because I am concerned about the welfare of women there," said Renuka Chaudhury.
CNN-IBN has learnt that the Centre's team had found there was adequate security at the pub. Two bouncers were present at the time of incident. The victims had claimed that two of the attackers carried knives and that some of the recruits of the Ram Sena were drivers and cleaners. The only saving grace for the state government was that the police arrived at the venue within 10 minutes of the incident.
And the concerned minister is taking no chances.
"The report has to come to me in writing. The officers have just comeback and gave me an informal briefing," said Renuka Chaudhury.
The Centre's team which went to probe the incident told it's not the first time that young couples have been targeted. Earlier too, couples who had gone for picnics were victimised in broad daylight.
Local people had reportedly raised questions about the way NCW conducted the probe. The Centre's report says a fear-psychosis prevails amongst youngsters in the city, especially in the light of the upcoming Valetine's Day.
But the second enquiry has clearly not gone down well with the NCW.
