Centre walks the tightrope as Subba cries foul

New Delhi: Member of Parliament Mani Kumar Subba doesn't have a leg to stand on anymore after CNN-IBN exposed once again that his birth certificate, that would have proved his nationality, is a fake.

And Subba’s claims of innocence have a familiar rant now. “I am not guilty. Your channel has sold out, you take money,” Subba alleged.

However, Speaker Somnath Chatterjee, who has been quick to take action against erring MPs in the past, is circumspect this time.

“I can’t react on the basis of newspaper reports. If the matter comes to me I will look into it,” Chatterjee said.

And the Centre, which once faced the Supreme Court’s wrath for dragging its feet in the Subba case, has this to say. “If court verdict is against him, we won’t hesitate to take action,” Minister of State for Home, Sriprakash Jaiswal said.

Subba's nationality has always been surrounded by controversy with successive governments looking the other way even in the face of mounting criticism and this time around, too, in the best of political traditions, it seems that Subba could well get away.
