Nagaland: For the first time after a decade of ceasefire, the Centre-Naga peace talks were held in Nagaland. And with a ceasefire extension agreed upon between the Naga Community and the Centre, it was truly a momentous event for the state.
The decade old ceasefire agreement was extended again, this time for an indefinite period. K Padmanabhaiah, Centre's Special Representative, said, “We had a free and frank discussion on the progress of talks and we ultimately agreed that ceasefire should be extended indefinitely."
When the consultation was set in motion there was every indication that the NSCN (IM) would continue to approach solution through peaceful means, and therefore prefer extension of the ceasefire. However, to make a difference from the earlier ceasefire this time round they wanted the ceasefire to be more specific.
"Naga people’s concern for early conclusion of talks were taken into serious account,” said Phunting Shimrang, Convenor, Ceasefire Monitoring Cell, NSCN (IM).
The ceasefire extension was generally welcomed, though there were also voices of dissent. Imchatoba, Naga Student's Federation, President said, “After 10-years of ceasefire, younger generation feels enough is enough."
"We cannot exist without peace. So we hope this peace will continue and bring change to our land,” he added.
The NSCN (Khaplang) faction however boycotted the talks suggesting that the real issue of sovereignty was being overlooked. Naga leaders say that with the ceasefire extension, it is up to the Centre to come up with a mutually acceptable solution.
