Gurgaon: Amit Kaushik works in a swank office in Gurgaon, the upwardly mobile district near Delhi.
Complete with a slick Notebook PC and looks to go with it, Kaushik is walking the corporate talk.
But till a year ago, Kaushik was a bureaucrat, having worked for the railways and HRD Ministry for 18 years.
It’s a life he misses but only sometimes. “I miss the house, because railways always had beautiful bungalows,” he says.
There are many like Kaushik all over the country. But what about the pay package?
Even after the latest Sixth Pay Commission hike, a secretary-level official in the Central Government will get Rs 80,000 as his consolidated salary plus a car and a house.
Now compare this with what a CEO of a medium sized company.
On an average, he/she would take home anywhere between Rs 6 and Rs 9 lakh per month. For CEOs of larger companies, there is hardly ever an upper limit.
But Kaushik believes there are other reasons why someone would switch from the government sector to the corporate world. “The offices are clean and bright and people here are nicer,” says Kaushik.
So the Sixth Pay Commission has come a little too late for many like him. But for many, the increment will not take them anywhere near what the CEOs earn.
