Champion athlete Poonia to fight Rajasthan polls on Congress ticket

Churu: Commonwealth Games discus throw gold medallist Krishna Poonia is all set to contest the Rajasthan Assembly elections as a Congress candidate. Poonia has filed her papers from Sadulpur constituency amid much fanfare.

"The way I have excelled in sports, I want to give my hundred per cent for serving the people of Sadulpur," said Poonia.

"If I am give a chance, I will rid the area from crime, work for better infrastructure and ensure that the sportspersons of the region get facilities on par with Haryana," she asserted.

Poonia's induction into the Congress was seen by many as the party's answer to Olympic medallist Rajyavardhan Singh Rathore entering the BJP's fold.

"I am sure Krishna Poonia will do very well here which is why Rahul Gandhi himself chose her for this role," said Congress leader Deepender Hooda.

While Rajyavardhan Singh Rathore may have been reserved by the BJP for the 2014 Lok Sabha elections as his name did not figure in BJP's ticket list for assembly polls, Poonia may give a tough competition to the Opposition's sitting MLA Kamla Kaswan.

Sadulpur was a Congress stronghold until Kamla Kaswan, the wife of MP Ram Singh Kaswan, turned it around into a BJP seat. With Krishna Poonia the Congress is taking a shot, hoping to win it back from the BJP.
