Chandigarh: The National Forest Survey has rated Chandigarh as the greenest city in India with the highest green cover of 35.7 per cent. Delhi comes second with a forest cover of 20 per cent.

After being rated the richest in the country, Chandigarh is now also the greenest city in India. "I think there is a lot of greenery in Chandigarh which makes it a beautiful city to live in," says Aman, a resident.

Massive awareness campaigns and tree plantation drives have helped the city to don its green robe.

"The level of awareness is the highest in Chandigarh due to eco clubs and societies in colleges and schools. This is a major reason, that the city is so green," says Forests Conservator Ishwar Singh.

"I must have planted more than 1,000 trees. I have seen them grow, mature and die and grow again," says seventy-year-old gardener, Paras who has been planting trees in Chandigarh for over a decade now.

French Architect Le Corbusier had made the layout for Chandigarh in early 1950s. Though he was criticised for leaving open wide spaces because the population that time was just five lakh. But it seems that Corbusier had in fact planned for the future.
