New Delhi: Punjab, Haryana and Chandigarh administration may join hands to have a Metro rail system in the Union Territory (UT).

"A consensus was arrived in a meeting held in Chandigarh last week to have an underground and elevated Metro for the UT and the adjoining areas located in Punjab and Haryana," said a senior Urban Development Ministry official here.

The meeting was chaired by the Urban Development Secretary M Ramachandran with the Adviser to the Administrator of Chandigarh and Chief Secretaries of Punjab and Haryana.

It was decided that, as a first step, a comprehensive mobility plan would be prepared for which Government of India will provide required support and assistance.

The Urban Development Ministry had appointed an expert committee way back in May 2007 to review the proposal of Metro system.

The committee recommended a light rail based system for the Union Territory.

The committee also recommended operation of a modern city bus service for the complete Chandigarh urban complex including adjoining areas under a common management system.

Now a detailed project report (DPR) would be prepared for the project, said the official.
