CCTV footage key to Chandigarh rape case

Chandigarh: A German tourist in Chandigarh lodged a police complained on Sunday that she was abducted in a car from the Taj Hotel premises and molested. However, CCTV footage from the hotel tells a slightly different story.

The CCTV footage shows the German tourist entering the hotel at around 0147 hours IST and around 0200 hours IST she goes out for a smoke.

Taj security officials say she was then seen talking to some young men who arrived in a car. She spoke to them for almost 10 minutes and then got into their vehicle and drove out with them.

The guard at the Taj Hotel said, “What could we do? We don't interfere with guests. The car stood here for 15 to 20 minutes and the girl and the others kept drinking coffee.”

Meanwhile, the version given by the German tourist is different. She says she was forced into the car, driven around the city for an hour and molested. The registration number of the vehicle given in the hotel records also turned out to be fake.

“As per the statement given by the girl to the police and also before a magistrate, it is a case of attempt to rape. However, we are still waiting for the final conclusion of the medical report,” SSP Chandigarh SS Srivastava said.

The incident has shocked the people of Chandigarh, especially since it comes a day after the new Chandigarh Tourism Police force was launched to look after the security of foreign tourists.

Chandigarh Police is now making quick moves to solve the case and also rebuild the shattered safe image of the city.
